Day One-2

Yellow hooves, car lots, Star Wars
T-shirt and skateboards. Hamlet, and

King Lear. My father’s being,
Made his becoming

American impossible. Always
Ahead, but I never

Experienced any of it.
Wild, an animal. If I would,

I would be
A white rabbit. A white,

Long haired rabbit.
Or white

Horses, swimming
Beneath.

What I remember
Is everything. And what I don’t

Are the endless processions
Of animals—foxes, horses,

And the black x’s of black
Bats soaring above.

The silent masked and haloed
Children

Making their small way
Through the glimmering Mexican village.
